There are five nominalizations in English

  1. Nominalizing intransitive verb clauses

  7. The Argentinean Peso has depreciated sharply: The sharp depreciation of the Argentinean Peso has occurred since last year.
  8. The desert has advanced in Sudan: The advancement of the desert in Sudan constitutes unconscious action of Sudanese who lives around the desert areas.

  1. Nominalization intransitive clause with verb types

Notes:
Increase (rise, improve) or decrease (fall, drop, decline) and  the verb “Change”
These verbs require the preposition “IN THE ” in their nominalization
These Verbs also require the indefinite article “A/AN” as a general rule
  1. The patient’s condition improved: An improvement in the patient’s condition…
  2. The temperature drops dramatically in the afternoon: A dramatic drop in the temperature 
  3. Unemployment has subsequently grown: A subsequent growth in the unemployment 
  4. The weather changed: A change in the weather…..
  5. Sales rose sharply in September: A sharp rise in the sales in September…
  1. Nominalizing using Gerund 
If there no true noun in the same word family as the verb, use the “ING” form of the verb (Gerund) in your nominalization.
  1. New types of plants are bred: The breading of new types of plant…
  2. Trees are felled: The felling of trees…
  3. Some people smoke too many cigarettes: The smoking of cigarettes of some people 
  4. Cancer may shorten the patient’s life: The shortening of the patient’s life of cancer...
  5. Wood is gathered in Africa: The gathering of wood in Africa….
  6. The channels are clogged with mud: The clogging of the channels with mud…
  7. Trees are cut down in Nepal: The cutting down of trees in Nepal…
  8. Learner drives are trained: The training of learner drives
  9. Some jobs are reserved for indigenous people: The reserving of some jobs for indigenous people…
  10. Fossil fuels are burned by the power station and industry: The burning of fossil fuels by the power station and industry…
  11. Trees are burned greatly in Timor-Leste: The great burning trees in Timor-Leste was caused by low income per capita of the majority of people

  1. Nominalizing active voice clauses
Use the same method for nominalization by first changing the active voice sentences to passive voice. Transform the sentences from active to passive then nominalize them.
  1. Loggers have destroyed a large section of the forest: The destruction of the forest by loggers 
  2. The government provides subsidised employment: The provision of subsidised employment by the government… 
  3. Many native animals have died: The dead of many native animals…
  4. Satellite measures the rate of deforestation: The measurement of the rate of deforestation by satellite…
  5. Many governments have provided subsided education for the general population: The provision of subsided education for the general population by many governments…
  6. Scientists have discovered cures for several diseases: The discovery of cures for several diseases by the scientists….
  7. The government constructs new roads to alleviate traffic problem: The construction of new roads to alleviate traffic problems by the government…
  1. Nominalizing passive voice clauses
Sentences or clauses which have a passive voice verb are nominalized in exactly the same way as intransitive verb sentences 
  1. Penicillin was discovered accidentally by Fleming in 1928: The accidental discovery of penicillin by Fleming in 1928…
  2. The forest cover upstream is removed by logging companies: The removal of the forest cover upstream by logging companies …
  3. The computer was invented in the 1940s: The invention of the computer in the 1940s…
  4. Effective new drugs are produced every year: The production of effective new drugs every year…
  5. The forest has been destroyed: The destruction of the forest…
  6. Soil is eroded when it rains: The erosion of soils when it rains….

    Nominalization skills are useful for academic writing to avoid plagiarism because there are several types of creating nominalization: active clause, passive clause, gerundial, intransitive verb clause, and intransitive verb of 'decrease (fall, drop, go down, decline...etc) and increase' (improve, go up, rise, grow...etc)
